The City Government of Davao, through the City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (CDRRMO), signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Jose Maria College Foundation, Inc. (JMCFI) on Thursday.

The collaboration aims to reinforce community-based disaster preparedness through the active involvement of the academe in research and development, as well as exposure to actual operations in key areas of disaster risk reduction and management, training and capacity building, and technical exchange.

Acting City Mayor Sebastian Duterte, in a message read by City Councilor Alberto Ungab, emphasized the need to further strengthen the city’s disaster preparedness and response in communities following the series of calamities that severely affected various areas in the country.

“To further reinforce our existing efforts in disaster mitigation, it is crucial to foster knowledge and capability in the grassroots level,” he said.

“Today’s signing of the Memorandum of Understanding between the City Government and the JMCFI is a testament to our commitment to strengthening our disaster preparedness efforts, recognizing the important role of youth and the academe in building community resilience,” Duterte added.

Key areas of the partnership include research collaboration, student exposure, training and capacity building, and technical exchange.

The City Government of Davao is also considering similar partnerships with other universities in the city to encourage the active participation of students, not only in research and development but also in actual community-based disaster preparedness. CIO
