Several households and establishments lying directly or along active fault lines in the city were visited during the City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office’s (CDRRMO) Walk the Fault activity on October 6–10, to inform residents of the existence of active fault lines in their area.

Household members were also informed of the necessary preparations and information on what to do before, during, and after an earthquake.

Walk the Fault is a week-long activity of the CDRRMO, in partnership with the Philippine Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) and other concerned agencies, to ensure that Dabawenyos are aware of the locations of the active fault lines in the city, and are equipped with necessary knowledge on disaster preparedness.

During the activity, the locations of the fault lines were identified and marked. The CDRRMO also conducted an Information Education Campaign (IEC) which kicked off in Barangay Mintal on October 6.

PLt. Col. Alfredo Baloran (Ret.), Head of the CDRRMO, said that this is the fourth Walk the Fault activity to have been conducted, aiming to mark and identify all active fault lines in the city.

He also bared that they kicked off the IEC in Barangay Mintal as it is traversed by two active fault lines: the Lacson Fault and the Dacudao Fault.

Baloran urged residents in the area to cooperate with the IEC team, highlighting the importance of community awareness and disaster preparedness.

“We are just identifying fault lines, and dapat makahibalo mo nga kamo naa diha nagpuyo ana’ng fault line. That is the purpose of this, para mapahibalo sa inyo what to do before, during, and after especially gyud kanang during (We are just identifying fault lines, and residents who are living on or along fault lines should be aware of its existence. Its purpose is also to inform the public of what to do before, during, and after, especially during the earthquake),” he said.

“All citizens in Davao City, living in Davao City, should have a knowledge about disaster preparedness. Kining nagpuyo aning atoang gimarkahan, dili lang man sila ang affected kung naa’y linog. Tibuok Davao affected (Every Dabawenyo should have a knowledge on disaster preparedness. Residents living on or along the fault lines we marked aren’t the only ones who are affected if an earthquake occurs, but the whole Davao City),” he added.

Davao City is traversed by the Central Davao Fault System composed of the Tamugan Fault, Lacson Fault, Dacudao Fault, Pangyan-Biao Escuela Fault, and New Carmen Fault, as well as the Colosas Fault. CIO
