Davao City Councilor Kristine Abdul Mercado on Tuesday called on social media content creator Christ Briand P. Oncada to issue a public apology for a remark she described as offensive and disrespectful to the Muslim community.
In her privilege speech, Mercado, the lone Muslim member of the council, also condemned content creator Oncanda, known as “Brader,” for posting the phrase “looking for baboy na Halal” on social media.
“Let me be direct—this is offensive, misleading, and unacceptable, especially when done merely to gain likes, shares, and followers,” Mercado said.
She said that for Muslims, dietary laws are sacred and explicit: pork, or baboy, can never be halal.
“‘Halal na baboy’ is a contradiction in itself. Using it carelessly not only spreads misinformation but also disrespects our faith and our identity,” she said.
Mercado added that as a public servant, she and other leaders are expected to uphold respect, understanding, and inclusivity.
She also said Oncada’s act ran contrary to Acting Mayor Sebastian “Baste” Duterte’s reminder that discrimination has no place in Davao City, underscoring his consistent stand for unity and mutual respect.
“I strongly condemn this insensitive behavior, and I urge Mr. Christ Briand P. Oncada to take responsibility by issuing a public apology and committing to greater cultural awareness moving forward,” Mercado said.
She stressed that freedom of speech must not be abused to spread discrimination or misinformation.
“Freedom of speech is not freedom to disrespect. Let us remind everyone that Davao City is a city of respect, inclusivity, and unity,” she said. CIO
