The 21st Davao City Council approved through suspended rules on Tuesday the closure of the Bucana Bridge on February 16, 2026.
Myrna Dalodo-Ortiz, Chair of Committee on Tourism and Beautification, the proponent of the measure, said that the road closure is in line with the ongoing preparations for the 2026 Chinese Celebration in Davao City.
She said that the event is important to underscore the city’s commitment to inclusivity, cultural harmony, and tourism development.
She told the body that the idea of holding the celebration at Bucana Bridge was both suggested and reaffirmed by Consul General Zhao Xiuzhen in a meeting with members of the Chinatown Development Council, and the Davao City Operations Office last January 6.
“Beyond its role as a key infrastructure project improving connectivity and traffic flow, the bridge stands as a symbol of the healthy partnership and enduring friendship between China and Davao City. Hosting Chinese New Year celebration at this location is therefore not only strategic but also a gesture of gratitude from Davao City, showcasing our appreciation for this meaningful collaboration,” she said.
The Bucana Bridge, also known as the Davao River Bridge, was built through a China Aid Grant through the efforts of former President Rodrigo Roa Duterte.
Dalodo-Ortiz encouraged the public to actively support and share updates, highlights and features of the Chinese New Year through the City Tourism Operations Office (CTOO), and other City Government media channels.
CTOO Officer-in-Charge Willenito Tormis Jr., said they have started the preparations for the celebrations, which also highlight the official lighting ceremony of the bridge.
A regulated partial road closure for event preparations will be implemented.
However, there will be a full closure during the event proper. CIO
