The City Government of Davao allocated Php 3 million in financial assistance to several local government units that declared a state of calamity following the magnitude 7.8 earthquake that struck Mindanao on June 8, 2026.
The ordinance authorizing the financial aid was approved by the 21st City Council on June 30, 2026.
Councilor Danilo Dayanghirang, Chairperson of Committee on Finance, Ways and Means, and Appropriations said that the funds will be sourced from a portion of the city’s Quick Response Fund (QRF), which comprises 30 percent out of the five percent Disaster Risk Reduction and Management fund of the City Government of Davao for 2026.
The financial assistance are intended to support the rehabilitation efforts in the Province of Davao Occidental (Php 1,000,000.00), while General Santos City will get Php 500,000.
The municipalities of Sarangani, Jose Abad Santos, Glan, Malapatan, Alabel will each receive Php 300,000.
Prior to the approval of the aid, Davao City had already mobilized immediate assistance delivering 4,000 boxes of relief goods and 3,000 one-liter bottles of drinking water to the hardest-hit areas of General Santos City, Sarangani, and Jose Abad Santos, Davao del Sur on June 16, 2026.
The City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (CDRRMO) likewise facilitated the medical evacuation of patients from Sarangani to the Southern Philippines Medical Center (SPMC) in Davao City, ensuring that those in critical condition received urgent and appropriate medical care.
The response was mobilized following 7.8 earthquakes struck offshore of Maasim, Sarangani, at 7:37 a.m. on June 8, leaving a trail of destruction, severely damaged infrastructure and displacing hundreds of residents. CIO
