Dabawenyos are reminded to avoid reckless driving and over speeding on public roads, stressing that discipline and compliance with traffic laws are essential to protecting lives and ensuring public safety.
Councilor Atty. Luna Acosta, Chairperson of the Committee on Peace and Public Safety, delivered the reminder during the Pulong Pulong sa Dabawenyo media forum on Tuesday, August 4, 2026, stating that the laws are meant to be followed at all times and being disciplined means obeying rules even without enforcement supervision.
“We hope that each and every Dabawenyo will take it to heart na ang totoong pagsunod sa batas ay hindi lang sa panahon na may nakatingin, sumunod tayo kahit walang nakatingin kasi yun naman talaga ang kailangan natin, ang disiplina ng bawat Dabawenyo (We hope that each and every Dabawenyo will take it to heart that true adherence to the law is not just when someone is watching, let’s follow the rules even when no one is watching because that is what we really need, the discipline of every Dabawenyo),” she added.
Acosta’s call for discipline is reinforced by the existing traffic laws that strictly regulate road safety, which is the Republic Act 4136, or the Land Transportation and Traffic Code, prohibiting and penalizing reckless driving or speeding on public roads while the City Ordinance 0270-23, or the Speed Limit Ordinance of Davao City, sets maximum speed limits across city streets to safeguard motorists and pedestrians.
Acosta also warned against thrill-seeking on the road, stressing that lives are far more important than fleeting enjoyment.
“Do not risk your life for a few seconds of thrill seeking. Mas importante ang buhay ng tao kesa sa motor ninyo. Sa tingin niyo, enjoy enjoy lang yan pero as we have seen, nakaka apekto siya sa buhay ng ibang tao. Nakakadamay pa kayo (Do not risk your life for a few seconds of thrill seeking. The life of a person is more important than your motorcycle. You think it’s just for fun, but as we have seen, it also affects the lives of other people),” she added.
Penalties for violation of the speed limit ordinance is Php 1,000 for the first offense, Php 2,000 for the second offense and Php 3,000 for the third and subsequent offenses. CIO
